Windows crashes

Ive just bought a new PC running XP Media Centre but have done something
terribly stupid & need help!

My old PC kept crashing & Im pretty sure it was caused by the anti-virus my
IP persuaded me to
buy (eTrust EZ antivirus). The support team said there was an unknown entry
in the LSP stack & got me to run WinsockFix, but it only sorted part of the
problems. Eventually I uninstalled it but the crashes still kept happening,
& as it was pretty old I decided to simply replace it.

When I got the new PC it came with some software to transfer files from old
to new. It never occurred to me that I could end up transferring the
problem on to the new machine - but it seems I have!

The crashes tend to happen when I click onto a link within a page if that
sheds any light on anything.

Any help very gratefully received.

Forgot to mention... the new PC seems to think its running 5.1 (Start>Run
winver) & crashed immediately after I posted my question, so its not just on
web links.

That's correct and entirely normal. Windows XP, under the hood, *is* Windows
NT 5.1.

Please check Event Viewer for Warning / Error Reports in the System
and Application logs for the last boot and post copies.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools, and
Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&sd=tech

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you should
double click for further information. You can copy using copy and paste.
Often the link will, however, say there is no further information.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double click
on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button
resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event Viewer. Now
start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of the message. This
will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report complete with links
into the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from Event
Viewer.

I cannot offer any solutions for that message.

Reboot the computer and then after 4 / 5 minutes look at the
System log. Post copies of the first 2 / 3 errors after the start
of the boot process.

next time check the registry files.this is where
your files are kept stable & usually there could be
a minor or major glitch in them.
