Windows Crashes with Vertical Randomly striped bars

My computer keeps crashing whenever I try to run a program that
involves almost anything with the operating system. The system freezes
and 6 or 7 oscillating black and white striped bars appear. The bars
oscillate, the cursor freezes, and the only way to get out is by
manually restarting the computer. This started about a month ago after
I installed some updates from Microsoft. I have reinstalled my
operating system multiple times and it happens every time. I also have
tried linux, ran that for one week and had no problems. However, linux
is not compatible with wireless card or else I would not be asking for
help here.

I am running Windows XP SP2 on a base Dell Dimension 2400. The
processor speed is 2.2gHz, video card is 128mb GeForce FX5200, and the
memory is 512mb. I am not sure what the motherboard is.

Try opening event viewer & see whats going on in the OS,scroll to an
event/warning,open,click on the url, this opens kb help/support in XP.
"Re-Installed several times" by this i take it youre booting to xp
cd,deleting
the partition (xp),creating one & letting xp format & install a new
copy,cause
if simply "reinstalling" the corrupted files/folders still exist...You
might also
go to dells web site, review youre board & the mfg (intel based or athalon),
both mfg web site offer the latest drivers/updates for the board, not
dell.....
