Yesterday my windows classic theme seems to have been coruputed. The x is
now a box. The maximize is now a file folder. There is also a small mouse
icon on the start menu that open secondary menus. What happened. Is this a
virus or spyware?

Could be either or the .theme file may be corrupted.

Update your antivirus software and run a full system scan. Do the same with
whatever anti spyware apps that you have.

In case your Windows Classic.theme file is corrupted, get a new one.

Go here...
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Read the instructions at the top.
187. Right hand side.
Restore Luna Theme - Restore Classic Theme
Click on Restore Classic Theme.

Windows Classic.zip is the file. Windows Classic.theme is the file you get
when Windows Classic.zip is unzipped.

Move or copy Windows Classic.theme to the \WINDOWS\Resources\Themes
folder.

Open the \WINDOWS\Resources\Themes folder.
Paste this into the Start | Run box and click OK...

%windir%\Resources\Themes

When you move or paste the file you will get a message box that says...
[[This folder already contains a file named 'Windows Classic.theme".
Would you like to replace the existing file?]]

Click YES and your old file will be replaced.

You may have to reboot to see the results. I honestly don't know. Reboot
anyway.
