Problem: Every (re)boot reverts to Windows Classic Theme

V

Victor

Everytime I reboot (windows xp sp3), it comes up with the Windows Classic
(rectangular START button, etc...) theme. I reset it to Windows XP, reboot,
or do some work then reboot, and back to Windows Classic. Any ideas?

That might help with the sound too.. can't say for certain though.

Actually, it didn't help for either. I even repaired XP with the CD the PC
came with (XP sp2), updated to sp3, still does it.
Any help?

Still no good. I even Repaired XP (with the CD that came with the PC - XP
sp2, updated to sp3). Still reverts to Windows Classic theme (and the stock
sound for email).
Any help?

Have you checked the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for
clues?

I once had a problem where a M$ update changed my user profile to
roaming ... and since I had never set up roaming, the roam profile was
the default XP environment. Very disconcerting until I figured it
out.

Possibly something similar is happening here?

Ok...just to recap:
1. Windows themes keeps reverting to Classic (even though "Victor1" is
selected in the THEME tab.
2. Sound Schemes revert to stock
3. Folder Options | View also reverts to DON'T SHOW HIDDEN FILES

This did happen after an update but it also may have started after a
BSOD.

Where do I see if I'm set up as a Roaming Profile?

Thanks in advance,
V.

Where do I see if I'm set up as a Roaming Profile?

You can check by doing the following:
- open System in Control Panel.
- on the Advanced tab, under User Profiles, click Settings.

There you'll see a list of all the user profiles on the system. The
type of the profile is shown in the "Status" column: you should see
either "local" or "roaming".

If your profile has the wrong type, select it in the list and click
Change Type. Then select the correct type and click Ok.

If you are logged in under the profile that changed, you'll have to
log out and in again to see the changes. The System applet may force
you to do that anyway.

Hope this helps,
George

I'm not set up as Roaming.

Ok.

You haven't yet responded to Elmo's last suggestion:
"One or more options/settings in an ever-growing number of third-party
applications may be disallowing the change(s) from "sticking". These
include but are not limited to Ad-aware Pro's Ad-Watch, Spybot Tea
Timer, SpywareBlaster, SpySweeper, Spyware Doctor, CounterSpy, AVG
Anti-Spyware, Norton AntiVirus, McAfee VirusScan and/or Antispyware,
NOD32, and Zone Alarm (Free, Pro, & Security Suite)."

Have you installed or updated any of these?

He also suggested you should read the following from Kelly's Corner:
[substitute your preferred style where it says "Windows XP"]

Q: Why does Windows XP Style change to Windows Classic Style?

This has to do with a Policy setting made either via gpedit.msc or
manually via the registry. The side effects are that Windows and
Buttons are grayed out under Desktop Properties/Appearance and the
check box under System Properties/Advanced/
Performance/Settings that reads: Use visual styles on windows and
buttons, does not remain checked. This edit corrects that behavior.
Download and apply either one on line 214, they are the same edit.

Windows/Buttons Greyed Out under Appearance and/or Windows XP Style

Other checkpoints:

1. Right click the My Computer
icon/Properties/Advanced/Performance/Settings. Verify that: Use visual
styles on windows and buttons is checked.
2. Windows Explorer/Tools/Folder Options/View. User Common Tasks in
Folders.
3. Right click the Desktop/Properties/Appearance. Windows and Buttons
choose: Windows XP style.
4. Start/Administrative Tools/Services. Scroll down to Themes and
verify that the service is started.

I applied this and it almost worked. When I rebooted, the Win XP style
came up then it switched back to Classic. I chose Win XP again, applied
it, chose it again, rebooted. Now it looks good to go. I deleted the
Sound Schemes I had and created a new one (after Line 214) and that seems
to work too.

Thank you

Just an FYI, none of these worked. Thanks for the effort.
