Windows Calendar Reminders

1) I was wondering if Windows Calendar has to be running for the reminder to
work, or will Windows Mail be enough?
2) If the Calendar must be running, is there any way to send it to the
notification area of the taskbar?
3) Are the reminders sent to Mail, or is there just an audible warning?

I find that Calendar needs to be running, although it will popup when you
reboot.

Countless times have I not run Windows Calendar for days, and not rebooted
my laptop for days - and I finally do reboot, I get about 50 reminders!

Lucky I sync my calendar with my phone!

A sidebar gadget that popped up notifications would be useful.
