Windows Basic, ugly again :-(

Microsoft, why you are ignoring all these users who love the current Xp
themes? I want to run Windows Basic on my computer, and I want it to look
close to the current Xp themes.

The current Windows Basic theme is actually very basic! Going to Vista will
be downgrading the OS from Xp to before Xp.

All what I want is the Xp theme there too, like the classic windows look,
what is the problem with that? Why the classic windows is there and the xp
look which is classic too is not? At least something close to it!

I want the new vista features, but the designers of Vista Basic have done a
very bad job, I will not be using Aero because I don't have the graphics
card for that, and even if I had, I will not be able to use it on my laptop,
it consumes all the power, it is just not efficient.

I cannot use it on my vmware virtual machines too, I cannot use it at work
either, so there is no place left to use it anyway!

I want a simple fast PC with a nice interface, I like the one in XP, and
millions like me do, and I don't want to install third party software to
give me back this look.

The new Windows Basic is worse than the latest Linux, even Linux now looks
better, and I already downloaded 2 versions and testing them in virtual
machines :)

You have 5 **I want's** in your post. The operating system is designed
for the masses. Too bad all people can't have what they want!

It is not Standard, it is super basic, no no, it is Basic "Ultimate
Edition", hmmm, no that is not descriptive enough, it is the Ultimate Basic
Interface, with Ugliness 2.0 Build 9c12.87x beta

many people share your disapointment with the vista gui and performance

its a flop

That's not the Vista interface - that's a not-much-better-than Windows95
interface with borrowed Vista buttons and wallpaper. Reading Paul
Thurrott's, I gather that the "Basic" interface has a somewhat new and
improved appearance in builds after Beta 2. Maybe it is not going to be so
bad. It will not be employing Aero for sure as far as anyone can tell, but
otherwise it might be quite nice yet with all the important functionality in
place.

The Gnome interface for Linux is sadly lacking in comparison to even the
"basic" Windows interface. The Windows interface will have all sorts of
features that are simply not there in the Linux Gnome.

You know, Linux is getting old. It's based on thinking from the fifties and
sixties and the GUIs for it are more like Window95's than Windows XP. Even
Windows Vista Basic outclasses it from every angle and point of view. Gnome
and KDE are not only geriatric in appearance and behaviour, combined with
Linux's spotty implementations of basics like drag-n-drop and copy-n-paste
they seem decidedly senile. And when they stoop to stealing of Windows Vista
wallpaper and chrome they suggest a sort of pathetic desperation.

The interface is ugly; I have already seen the latest build, and the photos
are on the internet too :)

Improving it is simple, they should get it to look as much possible to Aero
without the glass, and at least the windows borders and the buttons on the
top, the basic or standard once are damn ugly.

But it is RC1 now, no changes will be made I think.

The only problem is selling, I think the one with basic or standard
interface will be the cheep windows, and if you want Aero you will pay a bit
more, just to add more features to Windows.

It is not a problem with me, the problem is downgrading, here is the thing,
5 years of development of Vista, and the improvements are not much, the new
Aero is nice, but I just can't run it, and I am not much interested of the
rest of the features. (Except performance, I would love if it is faster).

I would love to run the latest windows too, and I am a big windows fan, but
I started seriously looking at the Novell Linux 10, I know it is not as much
as Windows, but I am a software developer, and I use Windows because of
..NET, and surprisingly part of Novell is already .NET (mono), at least this
is what they say, I must verify that :)

There is nothing wrong with the ideas of the 50th and the 60th, long time
ago Basic (the programming language) used to run in 2Kb of memory, yes, it
is called (the magic of math), or "code well written", today huge amount of
memory, incredible processing speed, and tons of useless and complex design
ideas that are slowing down just everything.

It helps the junior developers I guess, but the system performance suffers,
the same is in the Linux world by the way, everything is just slow.

Anyway, good luck with Vista, my expectation is most of the Laptops will
have the Aero turned off by default (for longer battery life), then everyone
will simply complain about the interface, then they will release the XP
themes a bit updated for Vista.

But for now, comparing Linux and Vista in a virtual machine, they both look
damn ugly; Linux a bit less, but I still can't use it :)

Yes, it's a rather innocent marketing ploy. Peope, considering themselves
budget conscious, will order the PC with Windows Vista Basic - "just only
what they need". Once home and buzzing around with it for a bit they will
discover that there's this magical "Areo Glass" interface that they are not
getting (or are missing out on) 'cause they went "cheep". Or their little
Johnny will cry and plead for them to run the upgrade wizard 'cause he wants
Aero Glass. Windows itself will provide a means for them to enter their
credit card numbers and "Voila!" Windows has been sold to them twice.
Nothing to get upset about.

Personally, I plan to just buy the business or ultimate edition and forget
about it. Although I might continue using Server 2003 on my 'primary'
machine simply because I like it so much.
