windows backup

I had backed up certain files and folders (excel and word) using windows
home xp backup system, I saved them to an external hard drive. My internal
hard drive crashed and had to be replaced. When I restored the files to the
new hard drive the folders that were restored but the files were missing
and all I got was an empty folder and am sure I had checked each file to be
backed up. Can some one tell me why this could have happened or what I
might have done wrong?

XP home "backup" must be installed as an option thru the xp cd...If that was
done, probably youre fault lies in simply "sending the files or folder" to
external
drive as is.Had you compressed the folder/file it might have saved the
data,or
saved to a cd....

what you did wrong was not doing a *** DRY RUN *** ALWAYS DO A DRY RUN !!!! do a test back up now AND do a test restore now AND DO THIS a few times !!!! make sure you know how to use the backup software !! (don't use important files !! )

I am seeing a problem here; I have installed a new Win XP Home and trired
adding the backup feature from the Disk. Unfortunatly there wasn't a backup
add on the disk. Is there another way of obtaining this feature?

Thank you for any help

Look for it in \ValueAdd\MSFT\NTBACKUP and install it yourself by
doubleclicking the file ntbackup.msi.
Alternatively, you can download ntbackup.msi at
http://www.onecomputerguy.com/software/ntbackup.msi

However, note that as backup programs go, this is probably the poorest
choice availoable. When it comes to something as important as backup, I
think it's worth spending a few dollars and springing for something like
Acronis True Image.
