I use WindowsXP Professional. I use Norton Systemworks to permanently delete
business files (Word Documents stored in My Documents folder). Files are just
dragged over to the Norton Systemworks program and can be "permanently" deleted
using its "Goverment Wipe" option. However, the manual for Norton Systemworks
says:
"In general, you cannot recover files that have been wiped. Windows Me/XP
System Restore can restore files that have been wiped if they are one of the
protected file types. By default, many document types, such as .doc and .xls
files in My Documents, are protected. Windows Me/XP System Restore maintains
copies of protected files. Wiping the original file does not wipe the copy that
Windows Me/XP System Restore maintains."
My question is, how can I still keep System Restore operating but change the
options so that .doc files are not "protected"? Interestingly, Microsoft seems
to have contrary information on its website at:
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/Windows/XP/all/reskit/en-
us/Default.asp?url=/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/reskit/en-us/pr
mb_tol_fngj.asp
The Microsoft website says:
"System Restore does not monitor the following files and folders:
-The virtual memory paging file.
-Personal user data, such as files in My Documents, Favorites, Recycle Bin,
--Temporary Internet Files, History, and Temp folders.
-Image and graphics files, such as those with .bmp, .jpg, and .eps extensions.
-Application data files with extensions not listed in
systemroot\System32\Restore\Filelist.xml such as .doc, .xls, .mdb, and .pst."
Thus, the Microsoft page seems to indicate that it's backup and restore
function in WindowsXP does nothing with Word documents in the My Documents
folder. Any thoughts in this apparent conflict between the Microsoft and
Systemworks websites is appreciated. I was hoping to simply drag my sensitive
business Word documents over to Systemworks, delete them via its "Government
wipe" and not have to worry that the Word documents are somewhere else on my
hard drive. Also, I prefer not to change any options in WindowXP's Backup &
Restore programs or delete old Backups, or turn the Backup & Restore programs
off and on.
