I have Windows XP professional SP1 With updates up to about 8 months ago. I
have been using the scheduled backups to copy to a 2nd physical drive for
more than 2 years without problems. Ten days I received the message
“Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy:80042301"
The backup program did not finish properly.
I tried a different logical drive as the destination with the same results.
After doing same research I ensured that at Start> control panel>
Administrative tools> Services
"COM+ System Application", "COM+ Event System", “MS Shadow Copy Providerâ€,
and “Volume Shadow Copy†were started and in automatic.
None of this and various combinations of settings worked. I still received
the same error.
My current work-around is that I have disabled shadow copy on the backup
job. That works but I cannot do unattended backups because open files will be
skipped.
Can I repair Windows from the CD? I have a backup copy of the whole C drive
from a few weeks ago when the automatic backup was working. Are there any
files I should restore? I do not want to go back to a check point because
after a few days I have installed NSW 2006 and I think that to do a proper
job I would have to undo everything I have done (I do not have a record of
this). Go back to a previous state and then remake my changes.
Please help.
