windows and USB troubles

Hi, Why does this happen and what can i do to fix this. I have (2) USB ports
on the front of my Dell pc; and (4) behind the unit.
Yesterday, I unplugged the USB cord on my pc thats connected to my printer,
so that I could plug in a USB adaptor for a wireless mouse. I took that out
and used the same port to plug in my motorola cell phone. After I got done
using these ports, I unplugged them & I reconnected my printer cable back. I
used the front USB ports
ANyways, I tried to print a doc and the pc couldnt detect the printer.
ALso, I connected my camera to these same front usb ports and the pc could
not detect the camera.

This has happened before. WHy is it that I cant unplug something (printer,
camera) from my pc so as to use that USB port for something else>>>and then
reconnect the (printer, camera) back and then they dont want to work.
I tried unplugging, restarting the pc. Dont know if i have to do it in a
special order.
Anyhow, any tips i can try?
I thank you in advance.

Are you powering off the device before you unplug it and powering it back on
after you plug it back in? If not try that approach.

Personally I reserve the USB ports on the back of my system for devices that
I keep plugged in all the time - my printer, scanner and mouse. I use the
ports on the front for hot swapping my camera, flash drives and external
drives. Why do you need to be plugging and unplugging your printer into the
front ports? You have 4 ports back there why not simply keep it plugged into
a back port?

Marcy,
Before you disconnect a device, do you check in you Notification Tray
(that's the one with the Time display on the far right side) for an icon to
click that says "Safely remove hardware" when you put the mouse pointer on
it? Click on that icon, select the device you desire to remove and wait
until you are notified "Safe to remove hardware".

I did as u suggested: Are you powering off the device before you unplug it
and powering it back on
after you plug it back in? and nothing happened. I also clicked to resume
printing and nothing.
I happen to have the printer on the front ports because I cant move it more
than 6 ft sue to space.

But, let me add that the printer port rarely gets disconnected. I just
needed to test a new wireless mouse & used that port out of convenience. The
other front port (2nd) has a USB cable always plugged in because i download
camera pics quite often. Again, I needed to charge the RAzr cell phone
(which I have never done before using a pc) & used that port out of
convenience.

I know now to right click so that I can safetly remove hardware next time.
But, again how can I fix this and why does it happen? More tips would be
great. And thanks to those already received.
