I'll try ping from another machine and will report back
If it is reachable by ping before the logon and NOT after you
start the logon then you can pretty much eliminate everything
except the "startup" programs (from all sources.)
Hang == Windows background blue with movable mouse arrow.
I've let it set overnite and rarely see any disk activity.
As indicated earlier I have removed recently installed
programs in safe mode logged in as Admin but suspect
either AD/DC issues or registry corruption is causing the
hang after the Normal Mode login panel.
Highly unlikely to be an AD or DC issue, other than a logon
name resolution problem but that would eventually time out and
fail gracefully.
It's safe to say: It's not an AD or DC issue in fact.
If I enter the wrong PW it does indicate that it is
consulting AD and errors on PW.
It is likely something in your profile or perhaps in your Group Policy
that is causing this.
If this is a DC then boot in directory service restore mode to remove
the application of any GPOs -- see if that helps.
If it is not, then go to the DC and eliminate any weird GPOs (all of them
if necessary as you can de-activate without deleting or even unlinking them
completely.)
Have you tried "hold the Shift" key at logon (as I suggested earlier) -- or
looking up the correct key to hold to prevent ALL startup programs from
running?
Try SaFve Mode with Command Prompt only -- see if that lets you get on
and reach a command prompt.
