Windows 98 to 2000 Game compatability

I am trying to install a game for my nephew onto a win2000
machine that is an OLD win98 game and having no end of
problems. Is there a patch or some code that can be added
to make 2000 accept the game and allow it to be played?

From my earlier post

"The only downside [upgrading from Win98SE to 2000 Pro] is certain games
won't run, eg DOS-based ones (which you
have to work around) and certain of those whose packaging doesn't explicity
say Windows 2000, or actually says "This program will not run on Windows
2000." These latter can't really be expected to play, although some of them
and many/most of the former either will play or can be cajoled to.

Try looking at other posts here for details on how to set your PC up to
enable Compatibility Mode properties for the games' shortcuts. And make sure
you have SP4. Beyond that, try posting specifics - such as the actual games
that won't play (I can't believe that NO games run) and what happens when
you try to run them. And do you have any other system problems? - that might
indicate something more far-reaching than being just game-related."

Also try trawling through extant posts in this group for tips on this sort
of thing - it's cropping up all the time. And if you post specifics of the
game in question, it might help.

I have compatability mode enabled (slayerui.dll registered OK), and the
compatability tab shows up, but ONLY while logged in as an
administrator. Normal user accounts don't show this tab. I'd rather
not play the game as an administrator (obviously) - how do I convince
win2k sp4 to show the compatability tab in program properties for normal
users?

btw the game is Myst (original) and it plays fine in win95 compatability
mode.

Just a suggestion, try setting a different user account with "Power User" capabilities. That is the closest you'll get to an administrator, with out actually being one. Hopefully once you have done that the compatability mode should work

Search for apcompat.exe, and run it; you use it to call the executable;
then it works.
