Windows 98 IPC$ prompt

R

Ramesh

I have two computers XP & 98 networked using cross-over cable. Both have
similar logins (Ramesh). I can access the 98 system and read/write shared
files.

When I access the Xp system from 98, it asks for IPC$ password or says "Not
logged on", even though I am logged as to the same user as XP username.

Hi, Ramesh -

The logins are the same - are the passwords the same also?

Hi Allan,

Thx for the speedy reply. The problem occurs even when i used the same
password as XP, also with a null password.

Hmmmm...

In order to access a resource shared by an XP machine the
the user needs to access the resource through the Guest
account or through a valid user account - and the
username and password need to be consistent, so a null
password shouldn't work with a vaild username.

I'd check one other thing, Ramesh - the Netlogon service
must be running on the XP machine. If it isn't, one
possible error message is the one you're seeing. While
you're in there, you might check to insure the Server
service is running as well.

Hang in there - we'll get it going :)

When I started teh netlogon service, it says "started and stopped" saying
"some services stop if they have no work to do".

The current scenario is "The network name cannot be found" when accessing
from 98 computer.

Outstanding, Ramesh - I really like the problems that fix
themselves while I'm at lunch :)

Have a great day -

Thanks Allan :)

Any idea why it happens with a username (without null password), I get a
IPC$ password prompt?

Your insight is highly appreciated.

Best Regards,
Ramesh

Ramesh,

it shouldn't happen when you log on to the Windows 98 machine
with a username and password for which an account exists on the
Windows XP Professional machine and on wich Simple File Sharing
is disabled.

If it happens nonetheless, perhaps one of the sections in
http://www.michna.com/kb/WxNetwork.htm points at the problem.
