Networking Win 98 and XP Pro

I am running a peer to peer network with windows 98SE and
XP Pro machines. I was using one XP machine as a file and
print server.
I recently re-installed the OS on the File and Print
Server and am now failing to connect to it from the 98
machines. It gives me the \\machinename\IPC$ Password
prompt. I've tried adding accounts for all the 98 users
but they still can't connect. It says wrong username and
password.
I haven't changed anything on the 98 machines.
From the other XP machines I'm connecting fine and can
view the shared folders and printer.
Can anyone tell me why this is happening?

sounds to me like the XP pro box is doing wath it should but the 98
box does not know how to react. IPC$ is part of the remote
administration in 9* and the authentication process id failing remote
administration in win9* requires a single username/password pair this
setting in 98 can be found in the system properties dialogue goto the
remote tab(I believe)
