Windows 2000 won't boot

I am have a dual xeon 550mhz processor computer w/ scsi hard drives, that
used to run very stable without any problems or crashes till i tried to
upgrade to the new service pack. Ever since that time i had periodic
crashes and couldnt get it up and running till I reformated the drive, spent
tons of time reinstalling programs, and than it runs for a while. Than
crashes and afterwards I cannot log into windows in any mode (safe, normal,
etc). I do not want to spend the countless hours reinstalling the software
again. I've tried the recovery console, runing without any auxiliarry
devices attached, but only method that works is a clean format and reinstall
till it crashes. Anyone have any suggestions? replace hard drive,
motherboard, whole computer?

thanks

Mike

Hi Mike,

Have you tried going in like when you would do a normal install and do a
repair instead of doing a normal install? This is not under recovery
console - I have never gotten that p.o.c. to work for me, but the repair
function removes and replaces system files much like an installation does.
After that, I'd patch up to the Service Pack that hosed you in the first
place and leave it alone.

Terry, I tried repairing system files, works for a little, but I shutdown
after a couple minutes, restart computer and back to the same screen, also
now i noticed computer does not shutdown unless i unplug the computer. I
hold the power button down, but it just restarts after i let go. And if i
plug it in, it starts automatically, interesting, huh?
