Windows 2000 terminal server temporary licenses problems

Guest

Hello,

The problem i have is that when a client try to access a win 2k term
server with windows xp professional, that client receive a temporary license
even if the terminal server is running windows 2000. According to microsoft
licensing policies , that client should receive a permanent license since
windows xp professional was made after windows 2000. How can i get this
client to receive a permanent license ? The licensing server is located on
the domain controller wich is running windows 2003 standard.

Thanks for your help
Francois

Have you checked the EventLog on the W2K TS?
Is the XP Pro client located on the same LAN as the TS?

Hello again and thanks for your help,

Yes, i checked the system event log on the W2k TS and there's nothing
about licensing issues. The xp Pro client is in the same domain as the TS
server but not physically at the same place, the client and the licensing
server are ont the same network in the same building, the w2k ts server is in
the same domain but in another building. The two building are connected via a
private network. As far as i know there's no firewall.

Hope it helps you find the solution :)
Thanks
Francois

Surely the W2K TS shows EventID 1004: cannot issue license???
How is the temporary license listed on the 2003 Licensing manager,
as temporary Windows 2000 or Windows 2003 TS CAL?

Assuming that it is listed as a temporary W2K TS CAL, the only
thing that I can think of is that there might be a black hole
router between your client and the TS, which blocks packets above a
certain size. This prevents the transfer of the permanent TS CAL to
the client (on first connection, the client gets a temporary
license, on second connection, it gets a permanent license).

If this is the problem, you have to change the MTU size. Check the
Terminal Services FAQ, there are 2 items about this under
"Connectivity"

al/terminal_faq.asp

Hello Again.

I re-cheked the event log on the win 2k TS and there's no such
event. The temporary client license on the 2003 license server is listed as
"temporary licenses for A02-5.01-EX".

Hope it helps you
Thanks again

Could it be that the 2003 DC is also running Terminal Services?
That would explain the situation. If you connect with this XP
client to the 2003 DC running TS, there is no 2003 TS CAL for you,
and you would receive a temporary 2003 TS CAL.
Can you verify this?
Installing TS on a 2003 server implies running TS in Application
Server mode, which requires TS CALs.
If you only need Remote Desktop for Administration on the 2003 DC,
uninstall TS completely (but keep TS Licensing Server!).
Remote Desktop for Administration is already pre-installed, and
only needs to be enabled in System - Remote, just like on XP.

Have you tried to delete the temporary license from the client?

And it's a temporary W2K TS CAL, not a temporary 2003 TS CAL?
Did you ever check the MTU size?

Hello,

On the windows 2003 domain controller (the licensing server) the
license is listed as "temporary licenses for A02-5.01-EX". I tried to change
the mtu size to the default ppoe and ethernet size and there's no change.
Here's the information i got when i use the command tsctst.exe on a client.

C:\temp>tsctst /A

If I understand you correctly, something is very weird with this
license server.
I've put an example of a screen dump on my website. Have a look,
and let me know if your licensing server looks like this, or if
your "temporary licenses for A02-5.01-EX" are listed *in stead of*
the normal "Temporary licenses for Windows Server 2000 / 2003".
If that's the case, it almost seems like the LS doesn't properly
recognize the OS version on the W2K TS, which also would explain
why the XP Pro client isn't issued a built-in 2000 TS CAL.

If that's the case, I would call Microsoft Support.

Here's the example:
