Windows 2000 SP4 Install Wizard Crashes

<Trying again -- no reponses before. Hoping someone has a suggestion
at least.>

I have had SP2 for a long time on my standalone Windows 2000 computer
at home. Never a problem with the machine. But recently the hard disk
failed. Luckily I realized what was happening and make a total system
backup to a removable disk using BackupMyPC. Then I replaced the hard
disk and did a restore. Everything is back to normal now.

So I decided I would update to SP4. I downloaded the Express thing
from microsoft.com and started the installation wizard. It got almost
to the end ("running processes") and crashed (the memory could not be
read). Luckily after clicking OK it put things back the way they were.
Well, I should say, it crashed again after hitting OK, but then
proceeded to put everything back as though it hadn't crashed.

I decided I'd restart the computer just to make sure there were no
stray electrons floating around, and then try again. After Windows
2000 came back up again I launched the installation wizard again. And
once again, it got almost to the end (running processes) and crashed.
And once again, it restored although it crashed right after clicking
on OK and then proceeded to do the restore.

So I restarted the computer and tried one more time. And again it
crashed at exactly the same spots.

Any suggestions?

You could try downloading the full network install and run that, see if you
have the same problem.
