Windows 2000 setup hangs

I have installed win 2k many times but have never seen
this before.

I replaced the IDE hard drive with a brand new one and
proceeded to reinstall win 2k pro from CD. Startup
detects the IDE devices just fine, I proceed to boot from
CD, win 2k install gives me the standard messages "Setup
is loading files ...". When it gets to "Setup is loading
files (Windows 2000 Setup)" it just hangs and I have to
hard boot the machine.

I had problems similar to this before replacing the hard
drive but at the time I attributed them to the bad drive
(there were other indicators the drive was bad).

I have tried the following to trouble-shoot this problem:

1. Replaced the memory - same results
2. Run Win 2k setup from floppies - same results
3. Pressed F5 during setup at the message "Setup is
inspecting your hardware configuration", then
specified "standard PC" - same results
4. Tried using a different CD - same results
5. Reset Bios to Failsafe settings - same results
6. Praying - same results

Sometimes it does not freeze at the same place. Sometimes
it freezes at the "...loading locale-specific data..."
screen. One time, at band camp, when it hung I noticed
that the floppy drive light was lit even though there was
not floppy in it.

The only variable left that I can think of is the
motherboard.

Any ideas? Thanks!

I am having the exact same problem. However, I only ran
into the problem after resizing my partitions with
Partition Magic. My intention has been to use the Win2K
install procdeure to "repair" the installation and recover
my data, to no avail! It hangs every time on "Setup is
starting Windows 2000."

I noticed that no one has responded to your post for quite
some time. Maybe we're out of luck. Have you been able to
resolve the issue?

I'm getting back to this issue today and came here to see
if any responses. Thanks for yours. If I find out
something I'll post it here.
