During an update to SP4, I recieved an error saying that
C:/winnt/system32/cacls.exe was in use. Nothing was running except the OS. I
can not find any info concerning this. Does anyone have any ideas or
experience with this.

In my case, it complains c:/winnt/system32/atapi.sys is open or in use. Some
has problem with c:/winnt/system32/netstat.exe. Have your problem solved?

Did you try installing it in "Safe Mode"? I read on a forum somewhere
that CD/DVD reading/witting software (Nero, Roxio et al.) might be
causing this problem. Makes sense, these (troublesome) applications and
related services are set to start at boot and would need atapi.sys to do
what it is that they do (screw up your pc). You might try killing these
apps and services to start at reboot and see if it helps. Someone
suggested moving atapi.sys to a temp folder and not to worry because sp4
will put a new atapi.sys in the system folder, I'm not sure about that
one, I kind of doubt that Windows will let you move something in use but
I haven't tried it.

Did you ever get a definitive answer for this question? I'm having the same
problem except with netstat.exe.

Thanks,

Mary
