Windows 2000 Server hangs during heavy disk usage

We have a Dell PowereEdge 1400 SC Server (1 processor), running Windows 2000
Server SPS3. From time to time (once a week, once a month) the user
interface freezes (hangs) and the server stops responding.

The only thing in the event log is:

The previous system shutdown at Date Time was unexpected

The date and time of the message is when it freezes (hangs) not when we
reboot it. The problem seems to happen when the machine is doing heavy disk
activity such as during an AntiVirus scan or a backup.

The machine runs Citrix, SQL Server 2000 and IIS and is connected to a UPS.

We've run pretty much every diagnostic we can get our hands on, and
everything Dell suggested. It never fails during a diagnostic.

Thanks for any help,

Kevin

This sounds like a system resource issue and a little PERFMON is probably
warranted to do some tuning of pagefile and possibly adding some memory.

I might add that if you're running Citrix, you may to think about clearing
your TEMP and TMP folders periodically.

Do a START > RUN > PERFMON and set some parameters that will alert you when
your mem or disk utilization pegs out and figure out what's gumming up the
works.
