Windows 2000 hangs during heavy network disk usage

We have several Windows 2000 servers one of which acts as a file
server for users' home directories etc. However, when I do backups of
these network shares the server sometimes stops responding and hangs.
The interface stops responding as do the services on the box, although
it is still pingable. The backup is done from another machine. In
order to get the machine back on line I have to do a hard reboot.

The only error message I get in the Event logs is 'The previous system
shutdown was unexpected'.

I have done tests of copying large amounts of data to and from this
machine and everything is fine. This only happens during the backup,
and not everytime - the backup sometimes worked without a problem.

The machine is running Windows 2000 Server SP4 and has an Intel
Pro/100 NIC.

Any ideas, as we are stumped?

Thanks in advance,
Jamie

Jason,

We are using ntbakup via a scheduled batch script.

Cheers,
Jamie
