Windows 2000 Pro will not boot

Today I had problems killing a print job, so I restarted my windows 2000 pro computer. After the restart, I had a bios error (which I fixed) but now the system will start to boot, getting past the white on black "Starting Windows" screen, but then it stops about a third of the way through "Starting up..." on the the color on white "Windows 2000 Pro" screen

I have been able to fixboot from the Recovery Console (with CD boot), but when I restart, I still hang at the "Starting up..." color on white screen

I have also been able to run a hard-disk utility (Maxtor Powermax) which confirmed that the disk is OK physically

What should I do next

Thanks in advance for any help on this Christmas Eve Problem!!!

Try booting into Safe Mode.

.... I have tried Safe Mode too, but it hangs after getting to the end of the white on black "Starting Windows" status bar.

What next? BTW, thanks for the quick reply :)

You seem to have suffered some file corruption. If it was my machine then I
would do this, in this order:

1. Press F8 during the boot phase, then select "Last good configuration".
Alternatively, you could boot into Command Console mode, then rename
"system" to "system.bad", and "system.alt" to "system".

2. If this does not work, boot the machine with the Win2000 CD, select
Repair when prompted, then allow the system to repair itself automatically.

3. If this does not work then I would install Win2000 over the top of the
existing installation. This will preserve its settings. It might also
preserve the cause of the problem!

4. If this does not work then I would install Win2000 in a different folder.

Hi KS,

You can try an In-Place Upgrade...
Windows 2000 In-Place Upgrade
(don't be apprehensive)
(will help gain a healthier system)

*Check your CD-ROM for bootability
(The very beginning of booting up is called POSTING)
Note: During posting, Ctrl+Alt(hold)& Delete(tap) can be used to start over.
1. Enter BIOS (at POSTING, tap the Delete key several times)
2. Usually Advanced CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor)
3. Find and change first Boot Device now Floppy to CD-ROM
4. F10 <enter> to Save(usually)
5. Place Installation CD-ROM in tray and restart (Ctrl.+Alt.& Delete)
If by chance the CD-ROM is NOT Bootable, it will boot normally, and not load the bootup
sequence. If so, use the four bootup floppies that came with system. If you do not have any,
format 4 floppies with an NT computer, and notice that the bad sectors are zero. You can
find the files at www.bootdisk.com.
Note: Mark your floppies 1/4, etc. so the order doesn't get mixed up.

Begin:

1. Boot with CD-ROM or Boot Floppies.
2. Choose "Set up Windows 2000 now" (not repair)
3. (When prompted) Insert Installation CD
4. Press Enter
5. Press F8 to agree with EULA(end user license agreement)
6. Press "R" for repair
7. Press Enter (Remove last floppy) to copy files from CD
8. Press Enter at prompt (this will take a few minutes)
9. Prompt for language (press Enter)
10.Enter CD Key number at prompt
11.Setup installs components (takes a few minutes)
12.Press Enter at "Finish" Prompt to reboot

Note: This will reset passwords and reset user passwords to "blank". You should set the
Administrator password, and one more administrator account for an alternate in case the
primary account fails. These should be strong passwords (10 or more alphanumeric characters)
with any other mark between the second and sixth character.

This should get you there...
If you still having trouble
Boot to Safe Mode with a Command prompt and do this
Type FDISK /MBR <enter>
after that
Type SFC /SCANNOW
after that
Type CHKDSK /R (infers /f also)
You will need to restart and it will take some 30 minutes.
