Windows 2000 Pro Locks Up During Start Up

My problem is that windows locks up during the start up sequence. Sometimes
powering down and restarting helps but not always... any ideas? Machine is an
HP xt6050 laptop. It acts like the hard drive just decides to go on strike
about halfway through startup and hangs there.

Boot your computer holding down 'Left SHIFT' to bypass the startup programs.

When into Windows, check what is running & then delete some of the unneeded
ones.

Click START, PROGRAMS, STARTUP & delete all of the links found there

Next, click START, RUN, & type 'regedit' & press ENTER

Now, navigate to:

HKey_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Now whilst the RUN key is highlighted, click the 'Registry' Menu then
'Export Registry File', choose a name for it & click 'Save'. This is a backup.

Now, look down the list & delete the entries that you think are not needed.

Do the same as above to the other registry key:

HKey_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Close 'regedit'

Reboot your computer
