system lock-up

Running windows professional with celeron 2.4ghz cpu and 512MB DDR memory.
All was fine until a few days ago when the system started locking up. Have
been successful at times getting to boot regular or into safe mode, but for
the most part system locks up have way through boot sequence. On one
successful boot, attempted to run virus scan but part way through system
locked up. Is it a memory issue? Annyone with ideas...thanks.

Usually hardware failure that causes that.

How much free space do you have in OS drive. As 2000 prof.. needs 200
mb free space for stable booting.
