The system will freeze up periodically and will not recover. I have to power down and do a reboot to get it back up. It acts just like the Windows 98SE, but not as often. This is just a home use unit.

Scan your PC with an external virus scanner,
e.g. on www.antivirus.com ("free online scan").

If your system gets a clean bill of health then you
may have to back up all your important files, then
do a clean installation of Win2000 (which involves
formatting your hard disk). When reloading your
applications, be careful what you load. Win2000
is very stable by itself, but some applications
(especially the free ones) are poorly written and
cause lots of trouble.

This is a piss-poor solution made by braindead tech support idiots who have NO clue how to troubleshoot a system. You only reinstall as a LAST resort. First, try to find a pattern to the freezes: do they occur in the same app, at specific times, and/or when doing something consistently? Approach the problem logically and rationally.

Seeing that you have all the answers, I will now watch this thread
with interest to see your inspired solutions. So far you limited
yourself to a few common-sense suggestions but nothing specific.
