Windows 2000 Advanced Server and Apache

Ola

Hello all,

I have a win2k advanced server with Active Directory and
an XP Pro. The two PCs are on a LAN via a Linksys DSL
firewall router.

I have suffered through configuring DNS and now when I do
nslookup, I get the Server and its Ip address. The server
also acts as the DHCP server for the XP.

So I can get to see the router and the server through the
XP, and I can see the XP through the Server as well.

The problem is that my webserver runs locally on the
win2k, but when I go into the XP and try browsing this
website residing on the Win2k, I get nothing.

I can share files between the two PCs and the XP has a
printer attached that I can print to, from the Server.

I have looked at my Apache configuration, and I cannot
find anything wrong with it.

Is there something in win2k Advance Server that is not
allowing my XP to see the webserver?

Port 80 on the server has been opened.

I have disabled advanced firewall option on my router and
still nothing.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Ola

If you are trying to access your server by using a public IP assigned to the
router, you will not be successful. Packets sent from a lan computer to a
public IP assigned to the computer's gateway router are not treated as
incoming packets by the router and therefore do not get forwarded to the
local server. You will have to access your server's web site by using the
lan IP. You can use a hosts file or your DNS server to map the URL to your
server's internal IP.

Are you browsing using the name in the URL, or the IP? And if not tha
IP, have you tried it? As in http://192.168.0.1/ ?

Well, it's not IIS, but other than that if it works from the web
server but not the workstation it's not an Apache issue.

Likely not.

It's probably not a router issue per se either.
Any help would be appreciated.

My guess is you configured your DNS to issue the external (Public) IP
address the internet would reach your web server through. Your LAN
workstation can't use that IP, so when you browse by name you get your
error. If you can browse by the internal IP of your web server, then
this is your issue.
