Window installer ploblems

Brent

I am having a problem reinstalling my MS Project program after I had my Hard
drive changed. I am getting this message "Windows Installer Service can not
be accessed Window Installer maybe damaged" I have tried to install a new
Windows Installer and it will only install part way and it runs into a
problem and will not complete the installation. I have tried to rename three
existing files and reboot but the same thing keeps happening. Can anyone
help? I have Windows XP professional as my OS

thanks

I have tried all of the suggestions from JS and nothing works. Any more help
with this problem would be appreciated. I used the cleanup to remove MS
Projects but got the same message when I tried to reinstall

JS - I have tried all of the suggestions and nothing seems to work. Don't
know if I'm doing something wrong or what. Do you have any more ideas ?

Kelly, do you mean the trial MS Project 2007 ? I read about the problems and
it does not sound good. Does this help with Windows installer problems?

Here is a new problem I am having now. I posted to a new posting and was told
I should repost here. Can anyone help with this problem?trying to reinstall
my MS Project (Error 1402 Setup can not open the registry key
UNKNOWN\MsoHelp.HtmlHelp\CLDID verify that you have sufficient permission to
access registry or contact PSS for assistance) then it uninstalled what had
been installed.
Any ideas where I go from here? I don't know where in the registry I can
find this to make sure I have full permission.

There are some suggestions here for 1402.

"You receive an error message when you install an Office program or open an Office program or document"

It is possible to use a Sysinternals program called Process Monitor,
to watch Registry activity. I've managed to fix a registry problem,
by watching a piece of code until it exited, then walking backwards
through the event trace to see what was the last Registry activity.
I actually fixed a sound problem on my machine that way. Due to
the "needle in a haystack" nature of a method like that, I would
rate such an approach as having a low probability of succeeding.

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896645.aspx

Process Monitor works best, if you start by identifying the program
to be traced, as that reduces the number of captured events you
end up looking at. I had to scroll through about 100,000 of them,
while working on my little problem. I imagine something like
an MS Project installation would be much worse. In cases
where multiple pieces of code may be involved, and they may
start and exit quickly, your odds are much worse then. The
problem then, is figuring out what to trace or filter for.

Thanks everyone for the help. Here is the problem I have with the error
message, it does not give me the location as outlined in kb/838687 (In
Registry Editor, locate and then click the subkey that is listed by the error
message) there is no subkey in the message. I tried to serch for UNKNOWN in
the registry but no luck. What do you think?

Thanks JS for sticking with me to try to resolve this problem. it will take
me a few days to revise the information on the links you provided and give
them a try. I will post back here to let you know if I have any luck.
One thing I have noticed is that MS Projects is still in my Program File but
it is not in my Control Panel so I can't remove it and it has been removed
using Windows Installer Cleanup Utility. Could this be part of the problem?
if so how do I uninstall?

Thanks again

One drastic measure you could try
(since Project is technically part of MS Office suite)
is to uninstall MS Office, then do a sweep for any
remaining Office and Project folders and then delete
then.

Next use regedit any search for any orphaned Office/Project
entries.

That is another good suggestion JS, I was trying to avoid this as I was
concerned that I would not be able to install any of my MS Office suite. Do
you think not being able to uninstall MS Projects that is still in my Program
File could be part of this problem? Should I just delete the files I can see
that are a part of MS Project?

Thanks again

At this point I would suggest you post your problem
to the:
microsoft.public.office.setup
news group.

group. You have been a great help I really appreciate your effort.
