This occurs on the next door neighbour's IE6 with WIN98SE:
He got Klez for sure as I was able to locate that but he doesn't have a
virus scanner that is up to date (about 1 year out of date). I removed that
but I didn't know what else he may have and told him to buy a virus scanner
which he hasn't as yet. However, I showed him the virus scanning companies I
thought were OK on their web sites and the ones he can buy online. When I
opened his browser, I noticed it had been hijacked to a porn site. So, I
downloaded Ad-Aware and Spybot and ran them which got rid of the hijacking
at least but when I went to go to Options to change the default home page in
his IE6, it said I didn't have enough rights. Also, I remember when I turned
his machine on, it booted to Microsoft Family Logon and no account name and
only allowed CANCEL to be clicked to get on which is what I suspect is
stopping the privileges. I added a username and logged on through that to no
avail.
Next, I booted into safe mode and went to Internet Options and was able to
change the default home page there but I still cant do it from a normal boot
from Control Panel, Internet Options or Options from his IE6 as it still
says, after all the spyware is gone, that he doesn't have any rights to do
that on his 98SE machine.
Can someone help me with that please? I admit to being lost on what to do at
this point. Thanks.
