Win95 & W98 clients can't see Win2K Server?

How do you get a Win9x client to connect to a Win2K Server running AD?

I'm only now getting around to replacing an NT4 server with a W2K server on
a home network. (Hey, if it ain't broke.... well, it broke.) The domain is
identified as 'domain.local.'

I set up a machine with Win2K server and enabled active directory. DNS is up
and running. My Win2K workstation and an XP workstation see it fine. But I
still have a Win98 and a Win95 client that can't find the server for login.

I've created a computer account for the client on the server, and am using
an existing username. At the login screen I enter the username and
password. The domain name is the 'domain' only portion of the server domain.
After awhile, I get an error message that says that the domain server could
not be found to validate the login. Bypassing the login allows me to see
other workstations running NETBEUI, and it can access the internet through
an ISDN router, but it can't see the server. I've set the network config to
logon to NT server 'domain' and restore connections. (I've also tried quick
logon.). I've tried installing the DSclient from the server disk. No luck.

What am I missing?

(A cc: to npreston at swbell dot net would be appreciated.)

Thanks,
Neil Preston

install WINS server on your 2000 server

plus check the 2000 server CD for 9x client software

Do you have a WINS server running and are the 9x clients
configured with the correct addresses for dns, wins etc?
You mentioned NETBEUI, do you have tcp/ip on them?

I would pay more attention to the other guys posting in this thread ...
... but I'm wondering if AD on the server is running in mixed mode or native mode.
