Hi,

I don't know if this is the right newsgroup to post my problem, but
anyway...

We've installed a Windows 2000 server and have configured a domain on it
(and DHCP).
There are a lot of WinXP-clients in the network. These just work fine.

We also have a lot of Windows 98 SE-clients that won't logon to the domain.
I've added the clients (with their computername) to the Active Directory and
they point to the same domainname as it is stated on the Windows 2000 server
(pre-Windows2000 domain).
The tool DSclient for Win95/98 has been installed but that won't even work.

Someone an idea, because i'm running empty on my magic tricks!

Thanks

Gerd Moors

Without the actual steps you made nor the exact error message it's a bit difficult but check this.

Hi,

First of all thanks for your answer for my problem.

But... that information hasn't solved my problem.

The first technical-info (272594) of Microsoft hasn't helped. I've installed the new vredir.vdx but everything stays the same.

When I try to logon a Win98-client on a Windows2000-server I get the message:

The domain password you supplied is not correct, or access to your logon server has been denied.

When I say 'Cancel' the pc boots on. When I use Start/Run - command and produce a ping to the server, the server is found.

But when I'm looking in the Explorer for my server I (the Win98-client) can't find it.

I don't know if that's enough info for you... Let me know if it isn't!

Many thanks

Gerd Moors

I believe I have the exact same problem. I think it started after I installed
SP4 on my WIN2k domain server. XP and 2000 computers work fine, 98SE
computers respond with "Cannot find domain controller or incorrect password"
(but in swedish).
Before I was running with SP2 and everything worked just fine.
I can't see any odd messages in the log files. Ping works fine both ways.
IPconfig looks allright.
I've looked at WINS but can't see any obvious problems.
I would unisntall SP4 but there is no uninstall...
If anyone out there has a clue, help would be appreciated.

I've now tried to upgrade a WIN98SE machine to XP pro and it can't connect to
my domain either. When I try to register the machine in the domain it says
"The server cannot perform the requested action" or "access denied".
During the installation it managed to create an account for the computer.
The account was inactivated, so activated it but that didn't help. I then
deleted the account and it can restore it again (as inactivated).
After some more tries I have now validated that I can make the computer a
member of the domain only if I change the name of the computer at the same
time!
Unfortunately the computer believes it couldn't change it's name so it stays
with the old name, thus making it impossible to log on to the domain...
I'm feeling a bit frustrated now... I really regret the day I decide to
install SP4.
