I have an old 486sx that has(had) win3.11 on it-i wanted to try to put put
win95 on it, but after not being touched for years, when i turned it on, i
got "non-system disk or disk error-replace and restart" is there anything i
can do? is there an ms-dos program or command to try to recover? also,
system doesnt recognize a cd-rom i put in it for grins-if or when i ever get
win95 on it-it will then be recognized, right? (i realiize this is winxp, but
where else would i ask these q's?--any links would be appreciated-(newbie))

This is a Windows XP News Group and and you are asking an Off opic question.

Both Win95 and Win3.x or old, unsupported Operating Systems.

A 486sx is a limited CPU which can't even handle more than 16MB RAM.

Junk it !

That is unless you all of a sudden gain great knowledge in computing and make use of it for
a specialized pupose. However, it is a 32 bit computer based processor with only a 16bit
path. It's junk !

Not likely your old computer has a BIOS that supports boot from CD.

You may find a boot disk here: http://bootdisk.com/ that will allow you to
boot your junker to DOS and play with it. Recall that if you want to try to
install Windows 95 from a CD, you will need to add the drivers and entries
in boot files to support the drive.

You need to load dos cdrom drivers to recognize the cdrom. Go to
bootdisk.com and you can download a dos floppy image with cdrom drivers on
it.

a 486 will run win95 just fine.
since it's been sitting for a while the cmos battery may be dead and
your settings may have been lost.

see if the bios can properly detect the HD.
if the setting don't hold...
you may need a new cmos battery

btw: it's not true at all about the 486 not being able to addrss more
than 16 megs of ram
although 4- 8 megs of ram is enough to run win95...

it's the 286 processor that can only addrss 16 megs of ram

AS long as you know that you're into antiques and
resurrection. Replace the BIOS battery, configure the BIOS
to match the specs that are hopefully printed on the label
for the hard drive. Those old computers did not detect all
the hardware the way new systems do.
You'll need to tell the BIOS what the hard drive's
cylinders, heads and such are before it can be read.

It might be possible to give the hard drive a gentle tap
when you power it up to get the platters turning. If it sat
a long time it could just be frozen.
