win32k.sys in XP home

Dell Dimension 4600 P4 512MB RAM XP home (not sure of the SP#)

I keep booting to a BSOD with the following error:

STOP: 0x0000008E (0xC0000005, 0xBF837252, 0xF8721AEC, 0x0)
Win32k.sys AddressBF837252 base at BF800000, Datestamp 41107F7A

I have tried reseating and replacing RAM, removed AGP video card and
boots to on-board video. I was able to get through the text part of a
repair installation (SP2), but after the reboot and XP splash screen,
the screen is blue and says "The system is being restarted . . . . "
then the screen goes black and then the HD light goes off and then I
get the BSOD.

I've pulled the drive out and did an up-to-date virus and spyware scan
and even copied the win32k.sys file from the service pack directory
with no luck. I tried a different ribbon cable, blew out the system of
dust. I tried to flash the BIOS, but I can't do that from through the
recovery console.

Any help would be appreciated, but I think I might just have to
reformat and rebuild.

Whoa, whatever you do don't go trying to flash the BIOS. If you don't know
exactly what you are doing you can render the system unusable. The first
thing we need is some answers from you. Have you attempted to boot from the
XP CD? Have you tapped either the F8 or esc keys during the boot to get the
boot selections screen and then chosen "Last Known Good Configuration" ? Have
you tried getting into "Safe Mode". As you have started and then stopped a
repair install a complete fresh install maybe your only answer. You could try
the "Recovery from a corrupt registry" method outlined here:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q307545
Post back after attempting this stuff and let us know how you make out. TTFN.

The only reason I tried to flash the BIOS was that was a suggestion for
another user group. When the guy brought the PC in, he said he
"upgraded the BIOS" which means he had no idea of what he was doing, so
it was kind of a last resort.

I can boot to the CD (that's how I can get through the first part of a
repair installation). Safe mode and Last Know Good give the same BSOD.

I pulled the drive and am backing up the data right now and then I will
try the recovery from a corrupt registry suggestion
