win32k.sys error stop0x00000050

I have a sony vaio that came with xp home. ever since i
went to xp pro- it has had problems. I had to do clean
install, and with absolutely no help from sony,
eventually found a way to get some orginal drivers up. I
have had hundreds of locks up, but was able to use the
computer as long as I saved a lot.

Recently, i have lost ability to copy files to cd. The
computer either restarts saying you have recovered from a
serious error, ot a couple of times I get a blue screen
saying a problem was encountered with a certain file:

WIN32K.SYS
STOP(0X00000050(0XF000FF67,0X00000000, 0XBF839823)
WIN32K.SYS - ADDRESS BF839823 BASE AT BF800000
DATESTAMP 3873195d

has anyone encountered similar problems? Is there a
fix? If I buy a new cd/dvd and install the new driver
software do you think it may correct what is going on?

There are some important things you don't mention.

Have you downloaded all applicable Microsoft security
updates?
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

Do you have an anti-virus program? Do you update and run
it weekly? Is its auto-protect feature active when you
use your computer?

It never hurts to get more than one opinion - online virus
scans are available at:
http://security.symantec.com

If you are not already behind a firewall have you
activated the one that comes with XP? Run Help and
Support and search 'firewall' (without quotation marks) or
get Zone Alarm (find via Google search). I've been very
happy with Zone Alarm.

Have you checked for spyware/trojans/etc.? Ad-Aware and
Spybot can be found via Google. Update and use both daily.

If a trojan if found then the following advice may help.

Trojans are stealthy and not always found by anti-virus
software. If you find suspicious processes running or task
manager or regedit is being killed after opening, you
might want to try one of the following tools to check for
trojans (after scanning with at least two anti-virus tools
to get rid of the easy stuff).

trojan system for Windows: http://tds.diamondcs.com.au/

protect yourself when you go online then you will never
have a secure and stable operating system. Knowledge is
