Win32.Blaster.worm -- Problem

M

Mark

The worm causes my comp to restart whenever im connected
to the internet after roughly 2mins. I've gone through
and have dl'd (SP4Express_EN.exe) which i believe is the
correct patch to fix the problem, but while installing
the patch, you need to be connected to the internet for
it to locate some extra files. It takes to long though
and so while connected to the internet, the comp
restarts. So I cannot fully install the patch. This is
pickle i can't get out of w/o some help. Microsoft
doesn't explain what to do if the worm forces your comp
to restart, you have slow net connection, and while
installing the Win2000 patch you hafta be connected to
the net. so plz help if anyone out there knows of a
solution, or just tell me where to go to find it, if I
haven't looked enough

Sp4 is not the patch., You need KB823980, go to www.microsoft.com/security
and install the patch form there. You should be able to get it beofre losing
connection. Also, Get a firewall!!

The thing is, I dont have the service pack 2 installed.
I've dl'd KB823980 patch but when I try to install the
KB823980, a warning box comes up, saying that the version
pack is lower than the one required. That I need to
install Service Pack 2 at minimum. Which then brings me
to the previous problem, posted before

Hi Mark,

Steps 1-6 below will stop the computer restarting. You
can then take your time and install SP3 or 4 and the
hotfix.

1. Start your computer but DO NOT connect to the
internet.
2. Click on the Start Menu and then click on Run.
Enter services.msc and hit enter.
3. Scroll down to the 'Remote Procedure Call(RPC)'
line and double click on it.
4. Click on the 'Recovery' tab. Change First, Second
and subsequent failues from 'Reboot the computer'
to 'Take no Action'
5. Click 'OK' and then close the services window.
6. Now restart the computer
7. Connect to the internet, either go to
www.microsoft.com and download the MSBlast critical patch
manually or go to windowsupdate.microsoft.com and
download all critical updates. N.B. for windows 2000 you
must already be running service pack 3 for windows.
8. Install the patch and let it restart the
computer.
9. Go to www.symantec.com or similar and download
their MSBlast Virus removal tool. Run this and let it
delete the virus.
10. You should now be clear of the virus and unable
to be infected again.

These instructions were written in a hurry so I can't
guarantee everything is 100%.

Hope this helps.
