Win2K won't run .exe files after IE5 to IE6 upgrade

Running Win2K-SP4 on Pentium II with 128 mg. Upgraded IE5 to IE6. Had Spybot
running in background. Terminated Spybot during upgrade of IE to avoid all
the popups asking if it was OK to change registry settings. After system
reboot I get the following error whenever I try to run an executable file.
"The file does not have a program associated with it for performing this
action. Create an association in the Folder Options control panel." To my
knowledge .exe's don't have an association in the Folder Options (I checked
on another computer of mine running same OS). I tried reinstalling Win2K,
but that didn't help, I still get same error. Can anyone help. Thanks in
advance.

assoc.exe returns:
..exe = exefile

ftype exefile returns:
file type 'exefile' not found or no open command associated with it.

Dave, I have to leave for about an hour and a half. Will check for a return
post about 5:30 CST. Thanks for your help.

Should have been

C:\>ftype exefile
exefile="%1" %*

So from a command prompt;

ftype exefile="%1" %*

to restore the default open action for exefile.

Capital letters are because I'm shouting with joy! DAVE, YOU ARE THE
GREATEST!! THAT DID THE TRICK!! I still have some issues with some apps that
look like they got stepped on, but I should be able to fix them just by
reinstalling. Thanks again for your prompt and accurate diagnosis and
response.

You're welcome. Glad to hear of your success. Strange that it happened
during the IE install.
