cannot upgrade ie5 to ie6 within win2k

Has anyone found a way to upgrade win2k's ie5 to a proper ie6? Win2k can
be upgraded to SP2 but gives winlogon.exe errors when it is upgraded to
SP3. I have narrowed the problem down to the fact that IE5 (56-bit) version
cannot be properly upgraded to ie6. I have checked the RAM and removed
all the extraneous hardware and still cannot seem to get past this problem.
Any suggestions?

What makes you think that Win2K's included IE5 cannot be upgraded to
IE6? I've done it on literally hundreds of machines, with no problems.
What exactly happens when you try? What error messages do you get?

Hi Bruce,

You're right, I've done this on dozens of machines as well but for some
reason this unit will not take on the 128 bit encryption into ie5. When the
upgrade to ie6 is done it says that it completed successfully and restarts.
Once you check the encryption in the new ie6 it still says that it is 56 bit. I
get both winlogon.exe errors and explorer.exe errors and the system will
not stop rebooting once service pack 3 is applied. I get stop: c00002 errors
if I disable the auto reboot. Thanks for your help.

So the issue isn't with IE6 specifically - it's with the encryption.

And you might's well get SP4 on this puppy, and all subsequent
patches/fixes. It's been out for a long time now!

Hi,

I've tried putting on the encryption patch and SP4 but it will not get out of a
reboot loop if I patch it beyond SP2. I thought that this problem might be
hardware related but I've swapped out the video card and network card and
removed all but one CD drive. Any other suggestions?

Event logs say anything interesting?

.Hi Lanwench, I could not access the event logs. It seems they have been
erased. I could not find them using the recovery console? This is very
weird!

Look for *.evt on your system....
I think your PC has some problems. Was this an upgrade from an earlier
version of Windows?
If you can't get this resolved, you might consider backing up your data and
reinstalling....just an idea.
