Win2K to Win2K home network ICS problem

My 2 computer home network has worked fine for 12 months. Now, ICS
doesnot work. Both computers can access eachothers files, but ICS at
the client has stopped. I have disabled firewalls on both machines,
but no difference. The server access internet fine.

I am not a computer wiz kid and I am looking for some straight forward
help to get things up and running again.

Cheers

double check the firewall,
make sure the client computer is set to DHCP not static ip.
type ipconfig/all on the cliet machine and make sure it has the server as
DNA and gateway.

Experience has shown me that when this happens it is advisable to remove the
NIC that supports the ICS, power up the PC without the network card, shut it
down and reinstall the NIC, once up open Network and dial up in control
panel and set the NIC to use ICS, you may get an error that ICS is enabled
for another connection (this is the old one) just say yes to the message
once enabled restart the machine.

ICS can be flaky sometimes in 2K.

Thanks Rob

I have checked the client and all is ok. I think the problem is with
the gateway computer. The ethernet card in the gateway pc has no
default gateway or DNS server settings. I am using an ADSL modem to
access the internet. It has addresses entered for all. Any ideas?

The local interface on the Gateway doesnt need a DNS and gateway address.
Make sure your external interface has all the ip settings entered correctly.
Try pinging known websites by Ip and host name see what happens.
Do u remember making any changes at all, hotfixes, SP2 installation??

Hi Jud

Did what you suggested. Had to disable NetBUI and enable File and
Printer Sharing and everything began to function properly again.
Thanks for the help. I suppose some of the parameters had become
corrupted and got set in tablets of stone within the network card
software and you just have to start again with a clean sheet!
