Win2k SP4 logon crash

After installing SP4, my computer will begin loading as
far as the placing of the icons on the desktop at which
time it does a restart. The same thing happens in all
safe modes except "Safe mode with command prompt" however
I know of no way that I can access the control
panel's "remove programs" function from a command line. I
can still access the drives via my network and from the
command prompt however as soon as I attempt to run
explorer.exe the same thing occurs. If anyone knows a way
to uninstall the service pack with only a command line I
would certainly appreciate it. Thanx.

I would boot off the Windows CD, go into Recovery Console
command prompt, and look for these files:
WINNT\system32\msblast.exe
WINNT\system32\Wins\Dllhost.exe
WINNT\system32\Wins\svchost.exe
The Blaster worm doesn't always crash your computer.
Maybe after the SP4 update, it does.
If you have any of these files, delete them, reboot, scan
for viruses.
It's not common for a machine to restart at the point you
indicate from OS-related issues. Not saying it's not
possible, just not likely.
When installing new drivers or any other update, it's a
good idea not to log on until the hard drive becomes
quiet. A bad driver or service can crash the system or
BSOD. If you don't log on, then the "Last Known Good"
feature works good. If you log on too quickly, you trash
your "Last Known Good".
If you have no virus, look into the "SFC" command. I
don't know much about it. It is supposed to forcibly
replace all the files on a system with the system files
from a CD. I don't know how to run this command but it
sounds like a possible life-saver in your situation.

I'm in the same boat on this one as well. The system acts
as if it's going to boot, get's past the dos like window,
gets past the windows 2000 screen but then reboots. It
will not boot to safe mode. I've not tried booting
in "Safe Mode w/ Command Prompt" but have tried booting
from CD and console recovery. This does nothing for me
because I cannot uninstall the service pack from there.

I've installed the drives in another system to check for
viruses and scan disk prove out ok. Still no boot.

This is probably similar to the problems were having on
our server though it appeared to work fine until updates
on 9/10.
