Windows 2000 SP4 Install and rebooting issues

R

Revision

Just want to post an easy to find message to the list detailing some
problems I had with installing Windows 2000 SP4 and their solutions.

Keywords: Microsoft Windows 2000 SP4 errors install scriptmaps
metabase entry recovery console uninstall remove continuously reboots

1. Windows 2000 SP4 reports errors during install:

Problem: ScriptMaps Error May Occur When You Install Windows 2000 SP4.
During the final installation process when installing Windows 2000
SP4, I saw the error message: "Unable to write ScriptMaps metabase
entry". This occours if you have remove certain script map entries in
IIS. Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 824391 says you can ignore these
messages and complete the SP4 installation without any repercussions.

2. Windows 2000 continuously reboots after installation of Windows
2000 SP4:

Problem: Windows would take a long time at the 'starting windows'
screen, then reboot in a continuous cycle. Booting using safe mode and
safe mode command prompt did not help.

Solution: Booted into the recovery console, browsed the recent log
files in c:\winnt. Performed a manual un-installation of Windows 2000
SP4 command line in the recovery console by following the instructions
in Microsoft Knowledgebase article 825062 titled "Service Pack 4
Permits You to Remove the Service Pack by Using the Recovery Console".
Completed unistallation of Windows 2000 SP4 via 'add/remove
programs'. If you do this, make sure to use Windows Update or,
preferrably, HFNETCHK to make sure that all applicable patches are
applied to your system. You can use post-SP4 patches on a system with
SP3 installed.

.

Hey,
Been trying this on an Active Directory Server... Any
idea why it's not accepting the Admin password as the
correct one. I know this sounds dumb, but I know for a
fact that I'm using the correct one. In the Console, is it
not looking for the Domain Administrator password? Thanks.
