Win2K Pro Stand-alone - Cannot logon, the domain is not available.

PROBLEM: Win2K Pro Stand-alone - Cannot logon, the domain
is not available.

ENVIRONMENT: Windows 2000 Professional - Service Pack 4
installed and all Windows Updates current as of 10/27/03.

SCENARIO:

1) I changed the Share permissions on Everyone.
I cleared all checkboxes (gulp), thinking that
surely the Administrators were the ultimate gods
on here and above Everyone. Ooops, huh?
Bad assumption? (words I can't say on here...
but you can imagine my dismay)

2) Got an error that it couldn't change permissions
on Pagefile.sys (hmmm... hint of trouble brewing),
since I thought it was ONLY changing folder permissions.

3) After acknowledging error, apps in the system tray
started to fail, Norton AV, ZoneAlarm, etc.

4) Tried to restart and W2K Pro kept Stopping at a blue
screen. I did as it suggested, ran Repair.

5) After Repair I am able to load W2K Pro, but can't
logon. Logon fails with the message, "The system cannot
log you on now because the domain is not available."

NOTE:
What I have noticed is during startup the drive light
is not flickering, as though no services are being
loaded. Logon prompt comes up ready way too quickly.
Don't see the message, "Applying network connections..."

6) Created and ran a bootable CD with:
Petter Nordahl-Hagen's
Offline NT Password & Registry Editor -
<http://www.petri.co.il/forgot_administrator_password.htm>

It was able to access the Registry and correctly
displayed the names of all the accounts--Admin
accounts, User accounts, Visual Studio accounts, etc.

I was able to successfully blank out the Administrator
password and my own (Admin level) user password. Did
that mainly to see if the Registry access was limited
to Read-Only (checking if Permission restrictions were
an issue?)

7) I restarted Win2K Pro and at logon I get the same
message, "The system cannot log you on now because
the domain is not available."

(Which I expected, since I've done nothing to correct
the missing domain problem.)

8) SUGGESTIONS WHAT TO DO NEXT, PLEASE??!!

I'm thinking I need to verify if the Domain name aka
Computer Name aka Host Name was changed
by Windows 2000 Repair.

IF my problem is simply that the services are not
running, how do I get them running PRIOR to logon?

IF my problem is file/folder permissions, how do I
reset them? Secedit.exe can't be run till I logon.

IF I install another copy of W2K Pro in \ALTWINNT
folder, will I be able to fix the permissions of
the older \WINNT installation?

Thanks in advance to all who take the time to read this!
Sorry for the long post but wanted to provide necessary
info to expedite a solution.
