win2K installation

Guest

I have my son's old laptop and have tried to upgrade win98 to win2k.
The procedure goes smoothly until the reboot. I get a screen that says press
any key to boot from CD, I do this and get the blue Win screen that says
Win2k Setup.
The bottom of the screen shows the files that are loading. It then says
Win2k statup.
And that is where it stays.......never moves from here.

It will still start up into Win98 if I take the CD out.

Help Please.

Sounds like you installed a dual-boot. Be advised that upgrades from win9x
almost always fail for any number of reasons. Save yourself some time and
trouble, given that you'll more than likely end up with an unstable OS with
all the remnants/ corruption left behind from the upgrade. Best to blow it
all away and go for the clean install.

To do a clean install, either boot the Windows 2000 install CD-Rom or setup
disks. The set of four install disks can be created from your Windows 2000
CD-Rom; change to the \bootdisk directory on the CD-Rom and execute
makeboot.exe (from dos) or makebt32.exe (from 32 bit) and follow the
prompts.

Setup inspects your computer's hardware configuration and then begins to
install the Setup and driver files. When the Windows 2000 Professional
screen appears, press ENTER to set up Windows 2000 Professional.

Read the license agreement, and then press the F8 key to accept the terms of
the license agreement and continue the installation.

When the Windows 2000 Professional Setup screen appears, all the existing
partitions and the unpartitioned spaces are listed for each physical hard
disk. Use the ARROW keys to select the partitions Press D to delete an
existing partition, If you press D to delete an existing partition, you must
then press L (or press ENTER, and then press L if it is the System
partition) to confirm that you want to delete the partition. Repeat this
step for each of the existing partitions When all the partitions are deleted
press F3 to exit setup, (to avoid unexpected drive letter assignments with
your new install) then restart the pc then when you get to this point in
setup again select the unpartitioned space, and then press C to create a new
partition and specify the size (if required). Windows will by default use
all available space.

Be sure to apply these to your new install before connecting to any network.

Then

Rollup 1 for Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 4

During Windows 2000 setup, at some point, will want to confirm the previous
operating system for the upgrade; at that point you'll simply insert the
qualified product install CD for it to verify. Then the install will
proceed.

Check the pc, mb or hardware manufacturer's web site for the latest bios and
or Windows 2000 drivers for your devices.

Thanks Dave, I will have to make those disks as I only have the one CD.
Also, another problem I seen to have. When I turn on the computer I get a
series of beeps, then a screen comes up stating a Real time error. I go to
the BIOS and put in the correct time, date but the screen continues to come
up. I can get into Win98 by selecting the Boot option. Win98 also has the
same Time 00:00:00 01/01/98, I change this to the present date and when it
reboots it is right back to the incorrect date. Very frustrating.

I am trying to update to get the computer to be able to use a Belkin
Wireless USB device. In 98 as soon as I plug it in, it stops the computer and
will not allow it to run at all. So, I have to go in a remove the command. I
understand that the proper driver for this is in 98SE but I no longer have
that disk although my other laptop has 98SE installed. Anywhere to get the
file (s) I need, that would solve my problem of not being able to connect to
the net with this laptop computer?

Thanks a lot, I appreciate the assistance.

Best to boot the CD-Rom. Sounds like your mobo needs a new battery. It also
sounds like your hardware may not be up to this venture.
