Win2k Domain and Shared Folders Access

V

Victor

Hello:

Need help please!

Currently, the single domain is NT 4.0. There is a shared folder to be
accessed by remote clients. The remote users login to their domains.
There is a one way trust relationship and therefore, they are able to
access the shared folder contents without having to put in a userid
and password. The remote clients are either NT workstation, WIn2k Pro
and few Win98. All these clients use UNC path to access the shared
folder (\\machinename\sharedfolder). For Win98 clients, userid has
been created in the shared folder to avoid userid/passsword prompt
while accessing the shared folder using a UNC path from the remote
machine.

If the above said NT 4.0 domain is upgraded to Win2k native mode,
wondering whether the said shared folder will still be accessible from
all remote Windows clients including Win98? If not, what actions needs
to be taken?

Second part of the question is, if the remote domain is upgraded to
Win2k domain but not the host NT 4.0 domain, does the current one
trust relationship will continue to work or does it have to be
re-established? If so, do the remote clients can still access the
shared folder after their domain upgrade?

Third and final part of the question is, if both remote domains and
the host NT 4.0 domain is upgraded to Win2k native or mixed mode, does
the said shared folder access continue to remain unaffected or?

Any help will certainly be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Victor

Updated to W2K Mixed mode, everything should work as previous working. You
might have to lower the RestrictAnonymous values on the W2K DC's, but that
should be it. Give it a shot and let us know.

Hi Brian:

Thanks for the response. I guess, the question narrows down to the
following:

1. What if the host domain (where the shared folder resides) is
changed to Native mode, will it impact the Win98 SE remote users in
accessing the shared folder? To avoid password prompt, the matching
userid and password that exists in the Win98 machines should also be
entered in the Win2k server where the shared folder exists. Does this
have any impact?

2. If the folder is published in ADS after migrating to native mode in
the host domain, can that published folder be accessed by outside
domains whether it is NT or Win2k with or without a trust relationship
(one way)? What about Win98 remote clients accessing published folder?

Thanks!

Victor

Hi Brian:

Thanks for the response. I guess, it narrows down to the following:

1. What will be the impact of Win98 remote clients who currently have
matching userid and password in the NT 4.0 cache server to avoid
userid and password prompt if the host domain (where the cache server
resides) is migrated to Win2k native mode?

2. What about folder publishing in ADS. If the host domain is migrated
to native mode, then, is it possible for outside clients (those who do
not login into the native mode Win2k domain) to browse the
shared/published folder?

Thanks.

Regards,

Victor
