Win2k Deployment in NT 4.0 Environment

I currently have a nt4 domain with multiple w2k member
servers. I want to go to w2k with ad but the current
schema has Domain A hosting DNS with a trust relationship
to my domain. I have a pointer to Domain A's dns server
now, so no DNS is being hosted on my segment. I was
thinking of running DNS on my domain and continue to point
my domain to the second domain as it exists right now.
Can trusts be still established utlilizing this method??
Will this cause any issues with my domain being the first
ad on the network, even though they are separate domain
names?

Hi Robert,

Is there some specific reason you want to "run DNS on your segment"? If
not, you could just use the upstream DNS, in fact in many migration
scenarios they just merge the old NT4 "resource" domains into the big
new AD domain, thus cutting out a lot of complication. You could join
your member servers to the upstream domain.

If you don't have a good relationship with the people in "Domain A", you
may wish to continue to run your own domain, DNS etc, and continue to
use trusts (which in my experience work fine, even between NT4 and Win2k).

One thing to look out for is don't use a "non-dotted domain"; it seems
this will break Dynamic DNS post-SP4.
