win2k advanced server hangs on "preparing netwrok connections"

I recently installed SP4 on a Win2K advanced server. After doing so, I
rebooted the machine, logged in as an administrator and tried to install the
IE6 SP1 update. Halfway through the installation, my server froze - I tried
to get task manager up, but nothing worked - I ended up cold-booting the
server.

After cold-booting the machine, I got stuck on a "preparing netwrok
connections" dialogue. I've tried booting in safe mode and it allows me to
enter a user name and password, but then it hangs on the login dialogue box.

I've also tried to go to the recovery console, but the admin password isn'tr
working when i try this.

Ideally, I'd just like to log back in to this server, to troubleshoot any
issues it might have.

If there are any suggestions on how to overcome this issue, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks,

Shervin.

Use the "last known good" configuration to logon and uninstall the IE sp.
Did you by any chance update an Intel nic driver during this session?
