Win2000 Pro svchost error freezing desktop

Michael

Dear reader,
I recently upgraded my PC to a Intel P2.6 on a ASUS P4SGX-
MX m/b and installed Windows 2000 Pro. After installing
all the related m/b drivers, LAN, Display, IDE, Sound ..
etc, I created a dial up connection to download the
Win2000 Service pack updates. I dialed up, began the
download and somewhere during the download, a window
popped up with 'svchost error' and the desktop promptly
froze. The download continued and completed but as it
attempted beginning to install, another message box opened
telling me the application could not complete. I was
hoping the service pack install might have corrected what
ever fault was causing the 'svchost error'.
Questions
1. What is a svchost error?
2. How do I correct what ever is causing it?

Many thanks in advance
Michael

Thanks for the reply Dave.
I run antivirus software called VET, with the current
virus templates installed and recieved 'clean' reports on
all scans conducted. I also downloaded the Nortons short
version scan to also scan for this particular virus, but
it also reported 'clean'.

The problem is that, while attempting to download any of
the security patches or even the SP4 upgrade, the svchost
error occurs, usually within 10-20 minutes of beginning
the download. This freezes not only the desktop but any
open IE6 explorer windows so when the download completes,
clicking the 'instal' button is in effective. I installed
Win 98 in a dual boot configuration in an attempt to
secure the downloads in a 'save to file' location
intending to boot back into Win2000 and run the instal
directly from the HDD but aparently, without win2K
running, the download is not possible and I get a 'Page
not available' error. I have reformated the drive several
tines, reinstalled Win2K and dialed instantly into
Microsoft in an attempt to retrieve the SP4 (or any)
upgrades and still the problem occurs.
If it would be any assistance, I could post a list of the
system event log error messages as there seem to be
several instances of various processes failing.

Many thanks once again.
Michael
