Svchost 100% CPU at satrtup and after

Hi,
I am having a problem with a svchost service. In my case it's my teenage
daughters laptop. When satrting up it is very slow, and trying to open
programs it just sits and sits. I have (yesterday) done a virus scan and
spyware scan, couple of minor infections but nothing that would cause the
slowness.
1. After startup I open the task-manager and went to the graph and saw the
CPU at 100% usage.
2. Checking the running processes and found a "svchost" causing the problem.
3. I checked and found I had 7 sessions of svchost running.
4. When I closed the affending svchost the CPU usage dropped to 4-6%, much
better.

I have checked with cmd - tasklist /svc to see what is assosiated with each,
but I got lost. I can not see anything in there that relates to a program
that would drain the CPU.
I did take a screen capture and can include this in another reply if
required. Could not see how to include it in this thread.
Is there any way of finding the program, so I can remove it, and reinstall
if required for the LT?
I would prefer not to do a reinstall, but if that is required, then so it
shall be.

Thanks in advance for your wisdom.

Kevin.

From Ramesh's web site: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/svchost.htm
Also: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=314056

To find out more about Svchost.exe entries try Process Explorer:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/SystemInformation/ProcessExplorer.mspx

Once you have Process Explorer installed and running:
In the taskbar select View and check 'Show Process Tree' and 'Show Lower
Pane' options.
(This will provide some of the detailed info you may need)
Expand the Process tree until 'Services.exe' has been expanded.
Next move the mouse cursor over the Svchost.exe process that you are
interested in.
Or expand the Svchost entry if you see a + sign to the left of Svchost
entry.
(You should now see a pop up with a list of services associated with the
Svchost.exe you chose)
Next double click on the Svchost.exe process that you are interested in.
The 'Properties' Window should now be displayed with numerous tabs
available.

It would be helpful if you could post the Command Line of the svchost
process generating the excessive CPU usage. In Process Explorer place
cursor on Process and select Properties, Image.

Hope this helps.

To Everyone,

Thank you for your replies and help. It has helped solved my problem (I
think) and the laptop is running a lot faster at start-up, the CPU is not
running as much as it was.

Regards,

Kevin.
