Win2000 Domain controller restore

Hi

I have 1 DC ( windows 2000 Advanced server SP4 ) that also functions as the DNS and DHCP server in a domain. It also is a file server. This server is running out of space and need to add drives and redo its raid configuration. If I chose 'back-up everything' on the windows backup utility on a tape, will everything (including AD,DNS,DHCP function) return to normal operation after reformating the server, install windows, and restore from the tape? Pls advise and Thanks.

I'm honestly not sure if "back up everything" in the Backup Wizard grabs
your System State, which is what contains your Active Directory and other
configuration data. (DNS, etc.)

If I were you, I'd run a separate "System State only" backup (in addition to
your data backup) just to be on the safe side, since this is the kind of
thing where you'd hate to be wrong.

I think your biggest problem is that some files (DHCP, maybe DNS if
not AD integrated) will be locked. Unless you're using a backup
program capable of backing up open files you'll miss these if you
don't shut down those services first.

Then as long as you back up the System State and all the files and
check for errors after the job completes you should be fine.
