Win16 subsystem insufficient resources - still no answer

Marcus

A few days ago I left a message to which I've had no response and which has
mysteriously disappeared from the newsgroup - does this mean nobody
(including Microsoft) knows the answer??

It was a simple question - maybe the answer isn't so simple. Since
upgrading(?) to SP2, my old programs stopped working after the computer had
been running for a while. Despite trying the various recommendations on
Microsoft's site regarding adjusting 16 bit program properties, nothing
worked. Support recommended a "rollback", which my computer refused to do.

I have uninstalled SP2, but the problem persists - I have to reboot to run
the programs.

Please can somebody help????

Remove the dots for the email address.

I thought I'd made myself fairly clear the first time.

I have some old programs that stopped working properly after installing XP
SP2.
After the computer has been left running for any length of time, when trying
to start these older programs, an error message appears " THE WIN16
SUBSYSTEM HAS INSUFFICIENT RESOURCES TO CONTINUE RUNNING PLEASE CLOSE THE
PROGRAM, REBOOT AND RUN THE PROGRAM AGAIN"
Despite uninstalling SP2, the problem persists. Does someone know how to fix
the problem?

That's because you haven't asked any questions.

1. If you are too lazy to post the question then I'm too lazy to spend a large amount of time looking for a post that I know nothing about. It's not like you have a valid email address to search for.

2. There is nothing wrong. Resources are limited to 64K areas in Win 16 programs. Your are running too many or are running faulty Win 16 programs. Use the Start command to specify the faulty or biggest one to start in it's own virtual machine. Type
cmd /k start /?
for more info on SEPERATE.

Thank you for your response. However, much as I would hesitate to contradict
an MVP, if the programs were running perfectly well before the upgrade to
SP2, why should they suddenly have transmogrified into "faulty" Win16
programs??

Maybe it would have been better for you to read the question I posed, rather
than try to score points.

I'm sure yours is bigger than mine.

So what question did you pose? I thought you asked HOW TO FIX (you said "Does someone know how to
fix the problem?")

How would installing SP2 affect the system design of the resource heaps in Windows 3.1.

This is probably what happened.

You got infected by something during the upgrade. It is a poorly designed 16 bit program.

But if you don't try running them in seperate memory spaces in your HYPOTHETICAL problem you'll never know.

Check and see if the autoexec.nt file is located in the
c:\windows\system32 subdir. If not copy it there from the file
located in c:\i386 sub directory. Then check the task manager (ctrl
alt del) and see if the processes tab has syncroad.exe and winsync.exe
running. If so you have been infected by a nasty high jacker. Find
gaint antispyware software and run it to remove the little bastards
and you shoule be OK. This two high jackers hit the same time windows
did the mass notice for the XPSP2 upgrade.

Good luck
