win16 subsytem insufficient resources

After installing XP SP2, some older programs wouldn't load after computer
had been switched on for some time.

Error message displayed was "Win16 subsytem has insufficient
resources................." Only way to fix problem was to reboot the
computer.

Adjusting properties of program made no difference. I tried to rollback pre
SP2 installation, but computer (Sony Vaio) didn't cooperate. So, I've
uninstalled SP2, but the problem has remained.

Any suggestions??
