Win XP's "Sound Recorder"

B

Big Mac

I'd like to know if Windows XP's built-in "Sound Recorder" device only
engages when I actually go in & select it, or does it engage & work
with other recording settings or software? Is it only designed to
record or play a WAV file - is that it's only function?

Like what I see when I go to my Master volume control, which is
working with my particular sound card - Options, & select "record",
and get a separate from the main volume control window, a "record"
master volume control window. So is that completely separate & not
using "Sound Recorder" when I record?

What I am doing is sending a playing MP3, or playing CD, played with
WinAmp, through Yahoo Messenger's voice channel. I have gotten the
microphone lock program, and have my sound card selected as the
recording device, and figured out what volume controls affect it all,
and it works. The sound quality is much better than running a song
through a microphone. However the quality of what people are hearing
could still improve some, maybe. Or is it because of Yahoo
Messenger's limited sound channel bandwidth, & it being mono too? (or
any messenger program having limited bandwidth)?

So that is why I am asking. Separate or working together. Or if not
working together, I'd like to experiment - can I somehow select
"Sound recorder" to record/send a playing MP3 instead in the
above-mentioned manner? Because then I can select the best rate/level
out of many to choose from that will give the best sound quality for
what I am trying to do.

Or will "sound recorder" always just write the recording to a file,
and that is all it is for? or can I use sound recorder to play an MP3
through my sound card - or does it have to be a WAV?

If you are confused, just forget about it. if you know what I am
talking about, & can help, please reply.

Thanks,
Big Mac
